The function of a hydraulic reservoir is to contain or store a system’s hydraulic fluid. In addition to acting as a container that stores the fluid a reservoir also serves to the cool the fluid, allowing contamination to settle out and to allow entrained air to escape.

In a Industrial Hydraulic System, where space is not a problem the reservoir contains the four walls which are generally made of steel, ad bottom that is dished, a flat top with a mounting plate, legs, along with a suction, return, and drain lines, a drain plug, oil lever gage, a filter/breather cap, cleanout covers and a baffle plate.

Often the size of the reservoir if often determined primarily by a combination of highest fluid temperature and highest ambient temperature. But there are other factors to consider as well when sizing, such as additional space if needed to allow for thermal expansion of the fluid and gravity drain-back during the shutdown.

Reservoir Types:

  • L-Shaped Reservoir (combines the advantages of base – and top – mounted reservoirs by providing easy access to the pump, motor, and other components as well as a flooded pump inlet)
  • Overhead Reservoir
  • Conventional Reservoir (most commonly used)
